Bit and Pieces in My March Kitchen

In my kitchen are lots of things that have come and gone.
Firstly, I picked up these little spice jars: ginger, mace, cinnamon, mixed spice and cloves from a charity shop for 50p each purely for decorative purposes.  They are on the wooden floating shelf in my kitchen.
I also picked up two larger jars for lentil and rice, though neither will be used but will probably hold ladle and wooden spoons
I picked up these two ceramic cow jugs as I simply liked the look of them and they were on sale in one of the shops. D rolled his eyes at me as I unwrapped the paper from them, as if to say - really - why do you want those?!.
Now for some staples in my home.  I tend to use either honey or golden syrup for oat flapjacks.  I had started buying golden syrup in plastic containers as it was cheaper, but have decided to go back to the tinned version as its recyclable.  I also wanted to point out that I had never noticed the dead lion covered in flies on the green and gold tin.  I wonder why?!

I also mentioned before that we have stopped buying a popular brown sauce that was also in a plastic bottle for those in glass bottles.  This one from Wilkin & Sons Ltd is quite nice. The tang is just right.
I don't use browning sauce at home as its an ingredient that's called for mostly in meat dishes, however I picked up this bottle as I have bookmarked a new recipe for Okra Gumbo that calls for it
Rolled oats is a staple in my home for weekly flapjacks.  Again in an effort to cut down on plastic waste I swapped my supermarket brand of rolled oat which is much cheaper for Mornflake Might Oats, its costs a bit more but the packaging is recyclable.
I have been a bit poorly and the lovely husband picked me up some herbal teas.  I don't buy teapigs as I find it quite expensive, but he decided to treat me to some this time.
I have been hearing fellow bloggers rave about Linda McCartney's vegetarian pulled 'pork' burger.  Well we had them today for the first time, they were okay.  I just won't be rushing out for them again. It lacked depth of flavour.
I saw these Coconut Flour Tortilla chips at a reduced price and picked up a packet to try.
This is not a sponsored blog post
For those of you who read my blog regular, you will have seen me reference Seaweed Bacon recently when I made King Oyster Mushroom 'Scallops', well I thought I would show you the packaging from the company Seamore I sea bacon.  A little does go a very long way.
Now throughout this IMK blog post I have been mentioning that I am doing my best to reduce plastic, but its not easy as the next few things are packed in plastic. I do normally buy okra fresh from a South Asian supermarket, but I saw these frozen okra at a local supermarket and at a good price that I thought it would be handy to have in the freezer as a weekly meal option. By the way I have used it for Okra Gumbo which I will share later in the month.
We both really like jalapeno peppers filled with soft cheese in a crispy breadcrumbs as an indulgent snack.
I went to a Oriental supermarket recently and came out with dried hot chilli flavour beancurd. Sometimes I just want to eat something with a bit of texture and bite.  I
I was also tempted by these Purpose Sweet Potato.  I have no idea what to do with it or how to eat it, but hope to rip open the packet soon.  If you have any suggestions, they would be most welcome.
Whilst looking for something under the space below the stairs, I came across a Christmas present that was given to me in 2016 - A churro maker.
I am hoping to give churros making a go this weekend.
And finally, D came home with a large tray of button mushrooms.  Now I am no fan of mushrooms, but this was a challenge to cook them all and I did.  I made a Mushroom Chilli, a Mushroom Curry and Mushroom Pasties and some were used for breakfast.

I am sharing this post with Sherry Pickings for In My Kitchen series.  It was started by Celia of Fig and Lime Cordial.  Its really a nice way to meet bloggers around the world, as well as see what's new and different in their kitchen.

  1. Your mention of the logo on the Golden Syrup container made me curious -- though I've never actually seen that product which must be UK specific. I googled and found that there's a Biblical story about Samson killing a lion and finding bees in the body. The logo dates to 1883. Interesting!

  2. I'm impressed with all your plastic free finds :)
The lion on the syrup tin is from the bible from the story of Samson, he killed a lion then bees made a honeycomb in the dead body - 'out of the strong came forth sweetness' Bit weird for a tin of syrup but there you go :)

    1. Thanks Sherry.
The mushrooms are gone and were used in many dishes that I will blog in the near future. The churros were a miss, I will try again. The seaweed bacon was nice, very salty though

  4. I love a good charity shop purchase - and I approve of the cows, even if they're not universally loved! Looking forward to see how the churros turn out - there's a stall that turns up around London a lot selling vegan churros, and they're delicious. I have also never noticed the dead lion - how weird is that? I mean weird that's it's there, as well as weird we've not noticed!

    1. Thanks Joey. The churros were a fail. I will try again with a different recipe. Yes agree about the unusual image on the syrup and us overlooking it until recently

  5. The spice jars are very cute, and I also like the cow jugs. You have some nice food there too. I look forward to seeing your churros, quite cool to have a maker for them. I really like mushrooms, so I would've been delighted by that amount of them!

  6. You are so good at spotting interesting finds in op shops (or maybe yours are more interesting than ours). I love your spice jars and cow jugs. It is interesting to hear about your approach to packaging - so much is in plastic and even stuff that looks like paper sometimes then seems to have a plastic lining. I had to google the lion on the Golden Syrup tin - it is a biblical story that makes you want to check where anyone gets your honey! So much good food here. And that is impressive to make churros - hope it worked ok. And hope you are feeling better and able to indulge in poppers and sea bacon and chilli bean curd. Am most interested to hear how the coconut flour tortilla chips went - sounds interesting, even though I wonder why (is it a nutrition choice to try making this?)

    1. Thanks Johanna. Its hit and miss with the charity shops and not all are the same. Yes I was super interested to learn about the story behind the lion on the golden syrup jar.

Ah don't praise me yet with the churros, they were a fail. I will try again with a different recipe. I will update this blog post when I have opened the coconut flour chips, but I will also leave a comment for you. It selling point was gluten free, not that I am gluten free!

  7. Shaheen, your glimpse of the world, especially In My Kitchen, is always a delight to read. Loved how you intend to re-purpose those lentil and rice vessels. Many things are multi-purpose IMK! Recently I saw a movie about how an ox was sacrificed for loved ones -- with flies buzzing about. (Perhaps an explanation behind your green & gold tin?) There's always a story... so glad to hear yours, xo.

  8. Jalapeno Flamers from Costco are one of our faves! I'd love to have to deal with that many mushrooms - I could probably eat them all by myself. =)

  9. I used to work at Manchester Art Gallery where they have this painting which is thought to be the inspiration for the Tate and Lyle lion.
