Broad beans Green Longpod
Garden peas Meteor growing well in toilet rolls. I've been using toilet rolls for peas fro a long while. I recently asked my family to save their loo rolls for me, each one of my family member raised their eyebrows and wondered what on earth for? When I explained, especially to my mother who listened with keenness, she thought it was a really thrifty and clever idea and wished she had known about it before.
Golden Sunrise Tomato seedlings are leading the way.
Beetroot Baraietola di Chioggia seedlings are doing well,
So are the White Chard seedlings. The courgettes, squashes, fennel and black kale have been a little slow. I wait patiently.
I mentioned that I also planted some strawberries. Its El Santa. I don't particularly like these, but it was all I could find. I am still hoping to find another variety. Other than the herb section, its the first thing gone into this ground. If you click on the image, you will see that we have to work around the tree trunks that were removed by the landlord about a year ago.

My spuds are sprouting, sunflowers growing like mad, alfalfa sprouting, salad leaves just sown, tomato seeds just sown, golden oregano plant split into three new plants, chives split into FOUR plants! The mint is sending out new shoots for the year and we have already had some in our 'new' potatoes from the co-op. Not bad I hope! Ann x
ReplyDeleteWow that is good.
DeleteI am goignt o have ot get myself some herbs. Missing those I grew in Scotland. My mother has given me some mint from her garden that takes over, and I picked up a chive plant from the market. Put it in the ground and hopes it does well.
P.S. Forgot to mention the garlic and the rhubarb! Ann x
ReplyDeleteHi Shaheen,
ReplyDeleteWhat an excellent idea with the loo rolls for the peas!! My beans and peas have come on a treat but some of my other seedlings are looking a little ‘leggy’. Might well have to do a repeat sowing for some of them in a few weeks if they don’t improve...
I know what you mean by leggy, my brassica seedlings have always got that way in the past.
DeleteMy Broad Beans have had nearly 100% germination success this year. Wahey!
ReplyDeleteWahey - is right
DeleteI'm doing my carrot seedlings in toilet rolls.
ReplyDeleteThats noew to me carrot seedlings in toilet rolls, but it does make sense. we are hoping to grow some in a bath that we are recycling, haven't started yet as we need to fill it with sand and soil. We better get our skates on.
DeleteYou are doing well here. Lots of vegetables! Homegrown tastes so much better. I need to learn lots!
ReplyDeleteHomegrown does tsste so much better.
DeleteOh how exciting! I'm hovering around my plants chanting 'germinate, germinate' too! So far no germination but they've only been in a couple of days so I must be patient! I love seeing your little seedlings, I'm so happy you have a garden again! x
ReplyDeleteThank you Sooz.
DeleteYes patience is the key.
How do you seal off the other end of the toilet paper roll? That's indeed a clever and environmental friendly way to grow your seedlings.
ReplyDeleteI don't seal of the other end, the soil is just put in compact and its fine. Try it.
DeleteTotally inspiring...I am behind you, but..but..my tomatoes are just about exactly like yours, so feeling good about that.
ReplyDeleteSorry you weren't here in Nova Scotia for my strawberry plants..had to remove an awful lot out of the garden, they sure take over!
Loved the lime green/spring green cell packs. Have only seen black ones here.
Great garden growing Shaheen!
Yes I would have been glad to have taken some of your strawberry runners. When I had the allotment, we had loads, starting from scratch again.
DeleteLove to see seed success! Yours look really great! I having such a good time this year with my seed experiments! I have my first round of seeds, Cabbage, Broccoli, Kale, and Cauliflower all planted in my gardening outside! They are doing great so far.
ReplyDeleteHappy Gardening!
Mindy
Happy Gardening to you too Mindy.
DeleteI don't plant much here in apartment, but usually herbs & tomatoes....but this year haven't done anything yet....U r inspiring me...
ReplyDeleteCome on Spice, plant somehting even if it herbs in the windowsill.
DeleteIt is great to see things moving along. There is a box of loo rolls in my kitchen waiting to be used. I start the sweet pea, broad beans and peas in them.
ReplyDeleteAh sweetpeas, I had some but they got nicked by the beasties. Need to pick some seeds, I love the smell.
Deleteso far only our sweetcorn have made an appearance! Broad beans usually do well for us, so I'm scouring the soil every morning for a sign of them! I'm jealous of your toilet rolls, keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteAh I only mnaged to get loads of toilet roll because I am surrounded by family who are now savign them for me. I am envious of your sweetcorn. I will have to sow some.
DeleteI love how broad beans germinate and unfurl their leaves - fabulous and really photogenic.
ReplyDelete:) Yeah they are pretty.
DeleteYour seedlings are looking good. My watercress is starting to shoot, but nothing from the old packet of carrot seeds. But I am patient and hope they will eventually germinate.
ReplyDeleteYipee for your watercress.
DeleteLove the idea of toilet roll seed trays. I might have a root through the recycling for some when I get home. I'm still waiting for some of ours to come up too although my french breakfast radishes are going crazy! We're growing Chioggia beetroot too, I'm looking forward to these and my hybrid ball courgettes the most!
ReplyDeleteI'm still waiting on my courgettes to pop up, the seeds may be naff. I'm excited about growing chioggia again though, so pretty in salads.
DeleteThats so cool... My broad beans and peas transplants are slightly bigger than yours and I am guessing they are ready for potting. I hope I don't fall lazy now.
ReplyDeleteYou can't get lazy now, its only just the start x
Deleteseedlings going slowly but surely! I absolutely love seeing everyone's spring seedlings growing!
ReplyDeleteThanks Wendy.
ReplyDeleteI've only got some herbs growing on my windowsill, but am happy to report that the basil is doing very well after refusing to grow an inch throughout the whole of winter!
ReplyDeleteYour doing better than me on the basil front. I've never been able to grow basil well. I have planted a red variety, let see if they even germinate.
DeleteIt's so reassuring to be able to snoop on other people's seedlings via the blog world! I have planted far too many but I think it might have been a good thing as my greenhouse came down in the gale force winds last night.
ReplyDeleteOh Hannah,
DeleteI feel for you, when I lived in Scotland, the greenhouse came down every year. It was tiring to put back together. But as you said on the postive side, at least you planted loads of seeds, some should survive this cold cold weather that has snook up on us.
