Jamaican Vegetable Stew with Spinners

Another recipe from the cookbook in my kitchen Original Flava Caribbean Recipes from Home.

The recipe this time was for One Pot Vegetable Stew - Jamaican style!
I've seen similar recipes made with gungo aka pigeon peas, but the recipe here used kidney beans. Other ingredients in this stew were spring onions, carrots, butternut squash, scotch bonnet, allspice, thyme and coconut milk.

I've also been wanting to make spinners which are small long thinnish dumpling that expand upon cooking for a long while.  So was pleased with the final hearty dish, though I need more practice to make the spinners.
This Jamaican Stew with Spinners was easy to make, especially with tinned kidney beans.

I should point out though, that my dish did not go reddy brown as the image in the book.  Its because I used tinned kidney beans.  I guess had I used dried kidney beans, then soaked and boiled them as instructed in the cookbook, the sauce colour would have been more red brownish.
I couldn't find the vegan recipe for the Vegetable Stew on Original Flava website, so I have tracked down a very similar recipe on Healthier Steps if you want to have a go at making it at home, then please do follow the link.
Also I am sharing this blog post with Foodies Read.

  1. I've no idea about spinners, but the rest of this looks wonderful. I see a new cooks book in my future. Hope you are keeping well.

    1. Thanks e. I'm ok, up and down - hope your ok?! I liked the spinners, i am not fan of the big dumplings so these suited me. Perhaps try and borrow the cookbook from the library.

    2. I've checked and this is not available from the libraries here. It does not appear to be widely available via Amazon either but I will keep looking. Thanks for visiting me.

  2. I've never heard of spinners but they sound like something I would love to try - and the stew sounds lovely too (but scotch bonnets are a bit beyond me!!!)

    1. Johanna, you must make them - i preferred them to the heavy dumplings, these were nicer i think and so easy to make. You can easily omit the scotch bonnet from the recipe if you want and use a milder chilli

  3. I haven't made spinners for ages! I remember them being really nice, so I'm not sure why it's been so long. Kidney beans are definitely underrated, so it's nice to see them being celebrated in a beautiful stew.

    1. Joey, you must make them again - its still feels wintery. So right kidney beans are underrated. I've eaten my fair share recently and if UK goes into lockdown, i'll be eating more beans. lentils and legumes!
