Harvest: Red Yellow and Green

Well it is truly autumn now, the weather has started to turn cold. 

Out come the big coats and comfy jumpers.

The garden harvest is beginning to slow down. 

We still have tomatoes from the greenhouse and some chillies (not shown). 

 I Our neighbour gave us some good looking red apples.

Turning Autumnal for Harvest Monday

So it must be turning autumnal in the UK, as my most popular recipe this week was Butternut Squash Scones.  

I've been tidying up the garden plot. I pulled out the purple curly kale as it had been destroyed by pests, so no homegrown kale for me this year.  I definitely need to invest in some netting for next year, but we still have plenty of beans coming, by the way that is me picking some beans (above)

These runner beans, purple and green pole beans (and the last pea pods) have already been consumed. 

The autumn raspberries are coming along nicely, they are double the size of those we harvested last year. 

We have some brambles snaking over from the neighbours fence.  These will be snipped soon as there is more thorny vine than blackberries, and the blackberries that are growing are small. 

The pears are still very firm.  I picked up four that had fallen to the ground, I guess that is natures way of saying they are ready.  So I need to pick them all over this weekend and make something with them.  I will be poaching them in syrup - Thanks Sue .

The greenhouse is still feeding us well with tomatoes, but I am not going to share any photographs of tomatoes today, instead i share with you this chilli plant.  I swapped a courgette seedling with a colleague for a chilli seedling a few months back.  We had a catch up recently and she told me that she still has not chillies on her plant, but has courgettes.  I told her that I have some chillies.  I think she was envious, I forgot to tell her though that mine are growing in the greenhouse!

I am ending with these nasturtiums that are bringing the bees to my garden which makes me happy.  I have used some of the nasturtium flowers for salads, leaves for pesto, as well as pancakes.  I will soon be collecting the green seeds to make a pickle.

Yellow Purple and Green Harvest Monday

I am back from my vacation, we had friends come over from the States, so we showed them what a beautiful country Wales is.  We also got to explore parts of the West coast. I will share more in the coming weeks.

Today I am sharing some of my harvest  as well as what's making my garden radiate with colour. 

Starting of with this sunflower...they are still growing....just not tall or big.

D picked up these pot chillies a few weeks ago from the garden centre to give the garden additional colour. We did this last year and loved the colour they added to the battered galvanised animal feed trough we picked up last year.  

I have not been good this year in using making the most of the plums, so no jams, chutneys with this them year, though I have made lots of plum cakes (some of which were taken into work) and a plum and chickpea curry!  

We still have some courgettes, though they are beginning to dwindle now.  In the same ground, I have some rainbow chard growing.  I will share them next week when I hope to harvest some for dinner. 

We had load of tomatoes to harvest, these are just some of them along with some raspberries and strawberries - yes, I am still getting strawberries, surprisingly. 

We have lots of beans.  I made Sarah Beattie's Green Bean Korma again, this time for our guests.  

I spotted a couple of pea pods too.  

And plenty of rhubarb.  I made a Rhubarb and Lentil Curry for my guests and they loved it. 

We have some cooking apples, but not that many as most fell to the ground every time there was a gust of wind. 

The pears are hanging on though.  I need to look for some pear recipes, so if anyone has some ideas, please do share - otherwise I will be preserving them in Star Anise Syrup again.  I am hoping to pick them this weekend.

Eat Your Greens Challenge and some Recipe Inspiration from Sarah Beattie's Meat Free Any Day

Well hello September, I am off on holiday.  I will also be taking a blog break as well, but before I go, I wanted to leave you with Eat Your Greens challenge, as it's my turn to play host.  This will hopefully give you plenty of time to think about sharing a green recipe with us this month.

Before I go, I also have some green vegan and vegetarian recipe ideas for you as well.  Last month I made a few interesting dishes,  all courtesy of Sarah Beattie's cookbook MeatFree Any Day.  

I made Sarah Beatties Peixinhos da horta which translates as 'little fish from the kitchen garden'.  It was delicious.  The husband has asked me to make them again.  You can find the recipe both in her cookbook Meat Free Any Day and on Sarah Beatties Facebook page.    

Last month I found my turtle jelly glass mould. I wanted so much to use it, that i decided to make Sarah Beatties  Avocado Coriander Jelly,.  I did of course adapt it a little with courgettes to mimic the outer shell.  It was part effective, and part not so much.   

It was still impressive though, but it could have been elevated further had i served it on a bed of lettuce.  I served this Courgette Avocado Coriander Jelly with a good crusty bread.  I think if I was to make it again, I may just make individual portions. 

Finally, I also made her Green Bean Korma, again I made only minor change and this was to substitute some for the green beans with homegrown courgettes.  You can find this and the Avocado Coriander Jelly recipe in Sarah Beattie's cookbook Meat Free Any Day.
